Gandhiji suggests to the addressee of the letter to go to Wardha any day after 24th April.

Because fo your behaviour and mistakes, Shankerlal had given up food since yesterday. Why don't you admit your mistake if you have really made a mistake. One is not humiliated by admitting one's mistake. It appears Shankerlal will not eat anything as long as you do not admit mistake. I want you to come and meet me.

Vinoba is sure that you would certainly repsond to my invitaition and make useful contribution. At present, I am observing vow of silence to clear up some arrears of work. The vow will be over on 19th April. I am to go to Indore on that day and shall return to Wardha on 24th April. I shall feel happy if you can come and see me any day after that.

Now, he clarifies that he had not joined the institution but would like to observe the vows without being a "member." It seems that he is carried away by Harilal. Your have to bear in mind whatever you are told by Kakasaheb. Yesterday, it was a day of paying homage to Shradhanandji. Pandit Malaviya is here: He asked all of us to go to banks of Ganga, we took bath and had "Darshan" of Kashi Vishwanath. The river-ghat is beautiful. Mahadev will write to you about it in detail. There was a German lady with us. I had doubts whether she would be given entrance in the Vishwanath Temple. But, as she is a Buddhist and hence as a Hindu, the priests had no objection. The lanes around the temple are very dirty.

Today we are in Bettiah. It is a town where I had stayed in the year 1916 on account of Champaran Satyagraha. so many legends are told about the place. I am told that strength of your class is increasing. You are to cultivate devotion which can bring you other things. Sacrifice for the sake of service is a little easier. I am sorry I shall be away from the Ashram for a longer time, as I have to travel far and wide for Khadi-work. But there is no other go.

Some of the Kathana cultivators saw me today morning. They brought with them a batch of Chothai notices which I was surprised to see. In this regard, I have sent a telegram to you and also to the Secretariat at Bombay. About your opinion about Vadhtal, I have to point out the fallacious calculations of annawari where both Kharif and Rabi crops are taken. Rabi crops in this district are like an oasis in a big desert. Rabi crops in this district account for 1/12 in the year 1914-15 and 1/20 in 1915-16. Certain varieties of agricultural produce e.g. spices, vegetables, variates, cannot be taken into account as they are grown by very few cultivators. Similarly cotton. I had requested you to allow me to accompany you during your visit to Vadhtal. For then, I could explain to you in person on the spot. Your decision is mainly based on Mamlatdar's figures. Your annawari of tuvar, kodra, rice, bavto, tobacco, etc. is too high. By my calculations, the annawari is less than 6. In Vadthal it has been 2 %. Annawari of Kharif crops arrived at by M/s Gokuldas Parekh and Patel and also by Mr. Deodhar and party was under 4 annas. My investigations for nearly 350 villages are corroborated by two other independent investigators. My investigation embraces all the talukas and covers a large number of villages in each taluka. I have no hesitation in asking for full suspension in respect of all but a few of them. In some of the villages, the first installment has been collected. In some others, where half suspension had been ordered, in certain cases both the installments have been collected under pressure: In caser where the first installment has been collected, suspension orders for the second installment may be issued. This is to be done not only on the ground of failure of crops but also on the ground that this district has very hard hit by the epidemic of plague. Your argument that the grains fetched high prices this year cannot be accepted. Even if full suspension is not granted, at least half the suspension can be granted. In that case, I shall try utmost to persuade people to pay the first installment in not already paid. The question of Daskroi villages remains. The flood did irreparable damage to their crops and they are entiltled to full relief. Those cultivators from over there who took Rabi crops should also be given the benefit of relief. It is true that the Kaira district has been naturally rich and prosperous. But the recent studies show that the district is going down the ladder in point of prosperity.(Ref. to the Mhowra Act). At least this year, the cutting of Mhowra trees should be suspended on humanitarian grounds, because, this year has been a scarcity year. This letter may be passed to the Government for consideration with favourable recommendation, if possible. In his forwarding remarks, Mr. Ghosal, Collector of Kaira, writes as follows : - Wheat crop : Less than 3 annas. Mustard : very good crop, whether irrigated or unirrigated. In the good tract it is 12 annas. In the inferior tract it is 6 annas. Gram: Crop annawari valuation at 8 annas in good tracts and 6 annas in inferior tracts. Full collection of land revenue may cause hardship in individual cases only. It is true even in the case of Vadthal. The cultivators have their holdings in both the tracts. Suspension has been asked for on the ground of high wages, high prices, and prevalence of plague also. But this also cannot be accepted. About the fruit trees (Tamarind, Mhowra, Rayan, Mango) : These trees bring enormous profit to the people. Mr. Gandhi's argument is that if Rabi crop is not good, then Kharif annawari should also be reduced accordingly, which cannot be accepted. As far as Nadiad taluka villages are concerned, there has been an inadvertent mistake in anna valuation on the basis of which half suspension had been ordered. The whole misunderstanding has arisen perhaps because of the 'distorted' idea of what the true anna valuation is.

It is 6.50 a.m. mow. It is time for prayer. Don't forget prayer. Prayer is to soul what bath is to body. Two American ladies (mother and daughter) came to see me. The daughter is a teacher in a school in U.S. A. She wants to study our system here: You may take a lesson from the life of Mirabehn. Woman is said to be idol of sacrifice. If the woman does to the society what she does to the family, there is nothing comparable to that.

Received letter written by Ch. Radha yesterday. I am glad that you are all taking great interest in the morning prayer. Remember the words of Kakasaheb. At the suggestion of Malaviyaji, I went to the banks of Ganga for a bath. But the 'ghats' here are unclean. We went to the Vishwanath temple of "Darshan". Germanbehn could get entry. The streets of Benares (Kashi) are also dirty.

I have not yet received your weekly letter. Staying in the new houses built for Khadi Pratisthan. Lot of Khadi-work being done here: I could collect a fund of Rs. 3500/- here: Mithubehn, Jamnabehn and Pernibehn have been able to do lot of Khadi-sale. Don't forget that spinning can be compared to a "Yagna" - You have a right to eat only when you do some good work.

Your letter in Manibehn's hand has been received. The women who want to come there should be accommodated well. You might know that Ch. Sushila, elder sister of Ch. Tara, is betrothed to Ch. Manilal. The marriage would be solemnised on 6th March at Akola. Ch. Manilal remained a bachelor till the age of 32. Now he has shown inclination for marriage. The matrimonial alliance is with a family of devotees. One who is not able to passions should get married. One who can control one's passions should try to achieve salvation in this life itself.

Your letter. I shall leave this place on 7th May. Maganlal and others are busy with their studies at Gurukul Kangri, Haridwar. I have received Harilal's letter. I think he has come to know his mistake and it seems he is in a repenting mood. Ramdas could not adjust himself to the weather conditions at Bolpur because of extreme heat. I have started observing two new vows- (1) not to eat anything after sunset, (2) not to take more than five things a day. - Reference to Revashankarbhai. I shall reach Ahmedabad after spending four days in Bombay.

It is a good thing that you have 'appointed' Gangabehn as your 'Chief'. "Cheif" means the first servant. In the olden days, king also used to be the first servant of the society. No selfishness was there in his laws and orders. Now, Kings (rulers) have become selfish. Hence the trouble. The "Charakha" teaches us the lesson of selfless service. Take a lesson from Mirabehn's life. Mithubehn, Jamnabehn, Perinbehn have come from Bombay for Khadi-work. Dakshabehn went to Bardoli and Germanbehn went to Kashi yesterday.

You can rest assured that even if there is only one 'satyagrahi', victory will be his. We have already won several battles. I have read your views about the weavers in your letter to Maganlal. About Phoenix, you may not hold the same views that you express now, if you happen to see it from near. About Mr. Quinn's about me, I think it is an exaggeration.

Parvati has a serious complaint against you. It appears you beat her and used abusive terms against her. If it is true, then, it is a serious matter. If you treat her as your wife, You have no right to beat her or use abusive terms. Or, when you want to treat her as your sister, then how can you indulge in such violence against her? Even if you did fasting as repentence, you do not attach much importance to it.

I have a little leisure today and hence I am writing to you. There is a feeling that young children become unhappy when their parents are not with them. But in your case, things were much different. Radha, Rukhi, Keshu and others were not at all unhappy after your train left. We have to correctly understand the position that children feel happy in the company of anyone who showers love on them.

With due regard to my words, you decided to send Jamnadas to me. Jamnadas also has proved his merits at the time of being arrested and also afterwards in the jail. All your four sons are such that they will bring credit and glory to our family, our caste and our country. I see in Jamnadas (Your youngest son) all the best elements - can be compared to a gem. Narandas will, I think, meet all your requirements. Similarly, about your daughters-in-law-Kashi and Santok. They have come up to my expectations. Shri Kalabhai also has expressed his desire to send his sons to me, emulating your example.

You have every right to write to me on any matter without hesitation. If you don't write, then who will? Regarding the inmates of the Ashram, from the class of "untouchables", many of them were tHerewith me at the Kocharab Ashram also. In the Ashram, people belonging to any class or caste have been staying together and taking their meals in the commoon kitchen. We should try to know what real "Dharma" is.

Gandhiji says that he cannot ask Shankerlal to leave the Home-Rule League and join him. Gandhiji had faith not only in the goodness of the British alone; he had faith in the goodness of man as such. Every man had an element of 'truth' in him. If he betrays the trust placed in him, ultimately it is he who will suffer the consequences.

I have not believed that one should observe celibacy towards his wife to build up one's character. But it is a necessary thing for one who wants to devote himself completely to service. It is necessary to observe truth and non-violence to build up one's character. Self realization is or should be man's only goal. I find perfect peace when I observe silence. That gives me more scope for introspection and helps in controlling anger.

It appears the thieves have proved to be more daring this time. We have to give some thought to the problem. Either we have to shift to some nearby villages or we should be ready to fight the thieves. We should make good lighting arrangement and also arrange for security men. I have to remind you about audit of accounts. About Noorbanu's ornaments, it seems we will have to see them by auction as there is no change in her thoughts.

You seem to think there is fault on the part of Vallabhbhai. But, so far, I have heard only praise of him from all corners. Taking for granted that there is some fault with him then, it should be brought to his notice so that he can correct himself. All men are likely to err. Did you and Shankerlal meet Vallabhbhai in person ? You should ask from him whatever you want to get from him. Or else, if you want me to write to him, I may do so. Not much can be expected from the mill-owners at present. The labourers should build their own houses. But it would take time.

Honour or shame lies in the approval or disapproval of one's conscience, not in others' opinion God, to whom we have dedicated our all will look after us, and if he does not, what does it matter even then.

It was not correct on your part to have written directly to Nanabhai. Kakasaheb could do it. Now, discuss with Kakasaheb whatever things you have written to me, seek his advice and do accordingly. Now that you have decided to marry, they you should do it at an early date. For that, you should find out a good match. No such match should be sought from among Ashram inmates. You and Padma hid all the while your feelings for each other. Now she will not be able to find a match for you. You may talk to Devdas. You can go and stay at Kosamba and complete the course in bee-keeping. The said course is of six weeks. But you can finish even in 15 days. About Sarojanidevi, it is not required to meet her.

I do think about you even when I don't write to you. Not that you should not write to me. It is not a botheration to me. But your letters are helpful to me in knowing your feelings. I learn that you have gone to Lonavla. Don't do anything in haste. Kishorelal and Nathji feel that Prof. Gune is of adventurous spirit. I don't feel so. How about your food, the company you get and the work you do daily ?
