I was deeply distressed over your walk out and the whole uncertain behaviour. I had found earlier some uncertainty in your behaviour but there was no unworthiness. But I was surprised to find it now. When I first met you, I was impressed by you. I don't differences of opinion. But because of your behaviour, the degree of regard for you is decreasing. That should not happen. I feel really very sorrow. Please correct me if I am wrong or else I want you to improve your behaviour. |

Your are becoming more and more of an enigma for me. I want you to live up to the certificate once given by Deshbandhu (C.R. Das). He had stated that you are a young man of brilliant parts, singleness of purpose, great determination, and above pettiness. But your behaviour at Calcutta and then again at Lahore grieved me and I felt petty jealousy in it. I don't mind opposition. You should have bravely recognised the necessity of your and your friend's exclusion from the Congress Executive. It was not aimed at you or others. It was only to enable the President to devise measures for achieving freedom in as short a time as possible. O do not want to change your views. I only want you to change your conduct in enforcing the views. |

Enclosed is the draft resolution or declaration for 26th inst. You may cut it or extend it. The shorter, the sweeter. I have been evolving schemes of Civil disobedience. I think Civil disobedience should be offered by me alone or jointly with a few companions on the lines of Satyagraha in S. Africa. Please come here a day or two before the Working Committee meeting or even before 26th. I am anxious to come to grips during the year of your Presidency. It was good that I did not become President for I can work unhampered in finalizing my plans. |

I am too busy to atten my correspondence to my satisfaction. No purpose would be my touring. Let those who believe in entering the Councils do so. We cannot forcibly stop them. It is enough if the Congress does not do it. I am thinking hard about Civil disobedience. But it may not be started under the aegis of the Congress. It must be started by me. I want you to come here for a few days before 14th Feb. I am asking Jawaharlal also to do likewise. (Ref. to 7 days' fast by Mahadev for peace of mind and by Durga for health) |

Your letter. I don't know the type of agitation being carried on by Malaviyaji. I hope it is not against the spirit of the Congress. If it were to be so, then it should be brought to his notice by sending him a cutting of his speech. If it is so, he cannot work as a member on Removal of Untouchability Committee. My touring would not serve much purpose. Civil Disobedience is more important that the boycott of legislatures. I have caught Natarajan's point. We will do whatever strikes us. |

You must naturally have been sad at the event of death in the family. Now, death causes no sorrow. It has become a veritable friend. In my view, death may be a deliverance and birth an imprisonment. So, it is necessary to improve your article. I have read your article about your new Charka. I shall publish it. You should complete the experiment with all the enthusiasm you have. The only thing is that you don't have a good carpenter. But, you can take the help of Krishnadas who is with you. He knows carpentry. You should take enough care of your health. When we criticise a villain, it is the wickedness or the weakness of the person that is being criticised, and not the person. If we say the crow is black, it is not deriding it. But if we say that the swan is black, it is deriding it. Example of Yudhisthira's incidents (1) that of his having spoken a lie once and (2) keeping silent when Draupadi's clothes were being taken off. (Ref. to 16th canto of Gita. There is no lack of modesty in criticising the villains. The critisicm is not of the villain but of his villainy. To say that Yudhisthira spoke a lie once, there is nothing work. But we can't say that he acted like a by not protecting 'Draupadi' at the time of "Vastraharana". |

All the three type of men may participate in the movement as suggested by you. Here, almost all men and women have registered their names. The only thing to be seen is how many of them will stand firm in the hour of test. About women in the Ashram during menstrual period : The question was really settled sometime ago. Such woman have to follow three rules. (1) They should not enter the kitchen during those days. (2) They should not cast their glance over the water to be used for cooking. (3) They should not touch ready food. We had discussed these things with Nathji and others who are well-versed in Mantras. These rules are applicable in the case of ready food, water used for cooking and milk. Not applicable to dry cereals. |

About your book on cotton I am to point out two mistakes in it. You have shown that weaving and spinning must have been independent jobs in the past. It is a mistake. The second mistake is about Muslim rulers entering the villages prior to Akbar's age. The politics did not much affect the life of the craftsmen. Even now, under the British, you find the same situation. |

I request you to go through my letter to the Vice-roy with an unbiased mind. You seem to have made up your mind that the Independence Resolution is wrong and Civil Disobedience, its corollary, is also wrong. You will find neither to be wrong. We must achieve unity through fighting for common cause, and not through Conference. You remember what we did at the time of floods in Gujarat. The Hindus had forgotten untouchability in Gujarat. The Hindus had forgotten untouchability. A few more such experiences will make them right. I seek Independence through redress of the age-long grievances of the masses. Small-pox is raging the Ashram. We are anti-vaccinationists from religious motive. We are following some treatment of it. I request you to give full instructions regarding the treatment of the cases of small-pox. |

I am sorry to learn that Sir D. hamilton would not come to Sabarmati. I have gone through his paper. I can reconcile to the inflated rupee. The second one is a matter of growth, dependent upon a government which has no interest hostile to the people. The first results in immediate loss of crores of rupees to India. I should be able to persuade Sir Hamilton that the movement is not meant to harm a sigle Englishman. |

Even though you have not lived in the Ashram, I have always thought of you more than an Ashramite. I also know very well of your study of 'Young India' and 'Navajivan' and also your attitudes. You are most fit to join the struggle. But looking to your state of health at the moment, you should be guided by the opinion of Tehminabehn. If need be, then only you should join. At present, you should remain in the "reserve force". |

At the moment, you will hurt if Mr. Khambatta joins the struggle. I agree with it. But, I am sure that you both would be ready to offer struggle and be ready to sacrifice even your life, if need be. It is true that our duty is to protect our body. But if for doing our duty, we are required to sacrifice our life, we should be ready for that. And God gives enough strength to those who offer struggle in the name of God. |
