Gandhiji wrote this letter probably to one Shri

Gandhiji invites him to go and stay with him for the rest of his days.
Gandhiji was observing silence in order to clear the arrears of work. Then he
was to go to Indore from where he would return to Wardha on 24th April.

Mahadev will write to you about it in detail. There was a German lady with

GHOSAL, (Mr.) |

|
Some of the Kathana cultivators saw me today
morning. They brought with them a batch of Chothai notices which I was surprised
to see. In this regard, I have sent a telegram to you and also to the
Secretariat at Bombay. About your opinion about Vadhtal, I have to point out
the fallacious calculations of annawari where both Kharif and Rabi crops are
taken. Rabi crops in this district are like an oasis in a big desert. Rabi
crops in this district account for 1/12 in the year 1914-15 and 1/20 in
1915-16. Certain varieties of agricultural produce e.g. spices, vegetables,
variates, cannot be taken into account as they are grown by very few
cultivators. Similarly cotton. I had requested you to allow me to accompany
you during your visit to Vadhtal. For then, I could explain to you in person
on the spot. Your decision is mainly based on Mamlatdar's figures. Your
annawari of tuvar, kodra, rice, bavto, tobacco, etc. is too high. By my
calculations, the annawari is less than 6. In Vadthal it has been 2 %.
Annawari of Kharif crops arrived at by M/s Gokuldas Parekh and Patel and also
by Mr. Deodhar and party was under 4 annas. My investigations for nearly 350
villages are corroborated by two other independent investigators. My
investigation embraces all the talukas and covers a large number of villages
in each taluka. I have no hesitation in asking for full suspension in respect
of all but a few of them. In some of the villages, the first installment has
been collected. In some others, where half suspension had been ordered, in
certain cases both the installments have been collected under pressure: In
caser where the first installment has been collected, suspension orders for
the second installment may be issued. This is to be done not only on the
ground of failure of crops but also on the ground that this district has very
hard hit by the epidemic of plague. Your argument that the grains fetched
high prices this year cannot be accepted. Even if full suspension is not
granted, at least half the suspension can be granted. In that case, I shall
try utmost to persuade people to pay the first installment in not already
paid. The question of Daskroi villages remains. The flood did irreparable
damage to their crops and they are entiltled to full relief. Those
cultivators from over there who took Rabi crops should also be given the
benefit of relief. It is true that the Kaira district has been naturally rich
and prosperous. But the recent studies show that the district is going down
the ladder in point of prosperity.(Ref. to the Mhowra Act). At least this
year, the cutting of Mhowra trees should be suspended on humanitarian
grounds, because, this year has been a scarcity year. This letter may be
passed to the Government for consideration with favourable recommendation, if
possible. In his forwarding remarks, Mr. Ghosal, Collector of Kaira, writes as
follows : - Wheat crop : Less than 3 annas. Mustard : very good crop, whether
irrigated or unirrigated. In the good tract it is 12 annas. In the inferior
tract it is 6 annas. Gram: Crop annawari valuation at 8 annas in good tracts
and 6 annas in inferior tracts. Full collection of land revenue may cause
hardship in individual cases only. It is true even in the case of Vadthal.
The cultivators have their holdings in both the tracts. Suspension has been
asked for on the ground of high wages, high prices, and prevalence of plague
also. But this also cannot be accepted. About the fruit trees (Tamarind,
Mhowra, Rayan, Mango) : These trees bring enormous profit to the people. Mr.
Gandhi's argument is that if Rabi crop is not good, then Kharif annawari
should also be reduced accordingly, which cannot be accepted. As far as
Nadiad taluka villages are concerned, there has been an inadvertent mistake
in anna valuation on the basis of which half suspension had been ordered. The
whole misunderstanding has arisen perhaps because of the 'distorted' idea of
what the true anna valuation is. |

I learnt from your letter that you will not be able
to go over here for the present because, your father does not permit you. It
is a good thing that you obey the instructions of your father. If you want to
do some good work by being there, you will have to develop your character in
such a way as to impress others. For that, you have to resort to the
teachings of Gita other books containing main preachings. Gandhiji advises
Narandas to go through the writings on Satyagraha in "Swarajya." |

has no luggage inside, we need not put a watchman there: Let Giriraj stay
where he is for sometime. About the funds, that which were received during
the tour, should go to Prantik Samiti. The rest may be kept in the Ashram.
YOU may consult Mahadev and Vallabhbhai. Let Bhansali be entrusted the work

It is a good thing that you have 'appointed'
Gangabehn as your 'Chief'. "Cheif" means the first servant. In the
olden days, king also used to be the first servant of the society. No
selfishness was there in his laws and orders. Now, Kings (rulers) have become
selfish. Hence the trouble. The "Charakha" teaches us the lesson of
selfless service. Take a lesson from Mirabehn's life. Mithubehn, Jamnabehn,

I will not be able to write a long letter today.
Writing with left hand. I hope your mind has gained peace. Similarly
Premabehn. I would like to come there, but not certain, as trip to Egnland is
still uncertain. Chhaganlal Joshi is to be paid Rs. 200/- from Ashram funds. |

I remember your demand for a letter from me written
on the day of vow of silence. Whether I write or not, it does not matter
much. For the Ashramites, there are three things which should be more
valuable than my letters. "Anasaktiyoga", "Bhajanavali"
and Ramayana". If Jamna and Kusum respond well to Punjabi Vaidya's
treatment, it well be a good thing. In that case, Radha and others may also
be placed under his treatment. Need to appoint somebody to look after

I have not
believed that one should observe celibacy towards his wife to build up one's
character. But it is a necessary thing for one who wants to devote himself
completely to service. It is necessary to observe truth and non-violence to
build up one's character. Self realization is or should be man's only goal. I
find perfect peace when I observe silence. That gives me more scope for

There seems to be something wrong with his eye-sight. He should get his eyes
examined and start wearing glasses if necessary. He gets good food - ghee,
curds, fruits, etc. I shall send Mahatmaji's letter to you for your persual.

requests Shri shraddhanand to go to the Ashram in October. The Ashramites
will feel happy over it. (shraddhanand redirects the same letter to his son
Indra asking him to take inspiration from Gandhiji's letter. Gandhiji happens
to be the only 'man' in India) |

visits to the Ashra, particularly during mu absence and enquire about the
well being of the inmates. It seems you have not gone to see Mahadev. You may

things. Encl. is the letter received from Lala Vasnalal which you have asked

problem. I got weighed myself. Reduction of eight stones in my weight. Even

out the discrepancy in date according to Hindu Calendar. Gandhiji discusses
about some lapse on the part of Chhaganlal. He refers to a similar situation
which was created by Harilal. Ref. to Chhaganlal's exit from Phoenix Farm. He
refers to the vows that he had taken before going to England and how the vows
could save him. Stresses in the importance of vows in life. |

think there is fault on the part of Vallabhbhai. But, so far, I have heard
only praise of him from all corners. Taking for granted that there is some
fault with him then, it should be brought to his notice so that he can
correct himself. All men are likely to err. Did you and Shankerlal meet
Vallabhbhai in person ? You should ask from him whatever you want to get from

It was not
correct on your part to have written directly to Nanabhai. Kakasaheb could do

advice and do accordingly. Now that you have decided to marry, they you
should do it at an early date. For that, you should find out a good match. No
such match should be sought from among Ashram inmates. You and Padma hid all
the while your feelings for each other. Now she will not be able to find a
match for you. You may talk to Devdas. You can go and stay at Kosamba and
