Jayan Mitra was born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala (India). He received his elementary and high school education in Mitraniketan at Thiruvananthapuram, where Gandhi's teachings are lived and taught. Gandhian - values such as humility, humanity, commitment to human rights and non-violence became an important part of his life. Since his youth, Jayan Mitra has been collecting photos and other material about Mahatma Gandhi and India's independence movement. He graduated from the University of Kerala and received a postgraduate degree (MBA) from Madurai Kamaraj University in Tamil Nadu. During and after his university studies, he was associated with several non-governmental organizations, such as Santhigram in Thiruvanthapuram, the Peaceful Society in Goa and the Indian Social Action Forum in Mumbai etc.

 

In 1995 Jayan Mitra took part in an education at the peace-oriented Folk School in Denmark and was involved in many social projects in India and abroad, such as the World Social Forum in Mumbai and the National Social Action Movement in Hyderabad. He organized many seminars and workshops in different parts of India, with and for different organizations.

 

In 1998 Jayan Mitra moved to Mumbai. In 2001 he registered GandhiServe India as a non-profit organization and has been its chairman ever since. He regularly organizes educational projects on Gandhi and nonviolence and conducts oral history projects.

 

Jayan Mitra designed and implemented the book MAHATMA - Gandhi’s Life in Colour, published by GandhiServe India in 2016.
